Up to modern times
By the end of the 19th Century the Company’s active involvement in the control of the craft had ceased. Recognised craft training dwindled until the Corporation of London, together with many Livery Companies including Cooks’ Company, formed the City and Guilds of London Institute. The Institute’s role is to carry out training and examination to assist young people in obtaining a craft based qualification.
Today the Worshipful Company of Cooks is involved in supporting the next generation of cooks through prizes, awards and financial support. The Company supports a range of charities connected to the catering industry.
The Worshipful Company of Cooks celebrated its quincentenary in July 1982. We look back with pride at our long, rich history but are equally committed to looking forward, remaining vital and relevant in City life and in the support of our craft.
The Company has employed some bizarre and unusual methods in its modern charitable fundraising endeavours including abseiling down Canary Wharf Tower and herding sheep across London Bridge – to exercise an alleged ancient right of Freeman of the City!
