Hackney Community College

Hackney Community College is a general further education college and the fourth largest employer in the Borough. The College provides most of the education for adults in Hackney and for the majority of students aged 16-19 educated within the borough. Over half the College’s 12,000 students are of minority ethnic origin and 96% are from disadvantaged areas. The college offers a wide range of courses including art, design and media, IT, mathematics and science and is skilled in widening participation amongst people who would not normally attend a college.

In 1997 the Worshipful Company of Cooks financed the appointment of a development worker to help part-time adult students with severe learning difficulties to progress to further training or employment. The Company also funded the refurbishment of a domestic training kitchen. On leaving the College, students are often employed within the catering industry.

A man’s surname was often taken from his trade and Cooks were no exception. Early records in the Calender of Letter Books of the City of London show: 1277 Hamo the Cook and 1311 Hamo the Cook junior; 1281 Henry the Cook; Henry le Kew (ie Cook); 1287 Richard le Cu; 1320 Peter Piebaker and Peter le Pasteler.
